A Birthday on the Farm

Ok... sorry it has been ages since posting an update. Yes, we are STILL at the coast visiting with family and soaking up the sun and surf! I know... life is tough spending so much time here at the beach! :) Sarah and Elizabeth have really been enjoying themselves and were extremely happy to see their Daddy this past weekend who made a surprise visit to see us at the beach. Thank you Daddy! We love you and really needed that visit!!! On Sunday, July 27th my father and his siblings hosted a surprise 85th Birthday Party for their mother on the farm. I must admit, she knew something was going on when she noticed all the food arriving from every direction but was still pleasantly surprised to learn the reason. They surprised her with a fun party hat and a bouquet of fresh flowers that I and her daughter arranged into vases for the picnic tables. Once Grandma knew the majority of the details and who was coming the picnic preparations were in full force. We all pitched in and pulled off a happy event for her to cherish for many years. The Hammond Farm covers close to 100 acres and has been in our family for over 100 years. So, needless to say it is a very special place to all of us. Grandma grew up close to the farm and married my grandfather who was born on the farm along with his nine other siblings. It was really a lot of fun visiting with family members and grilling out on this special soil. One of Granddaddy's brothers, Uncle Owen (in his late 80's) is still farming! I know..., pretty amazing!
My grandmother was truly delighted to have us all there by her side enjoying the delicious food and good times. I'll post a few pictures below for you to see.
My father grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and his brother fried the fish and hush puppies.
Sarah enjoyed fishing in Grandma's pond and drawing in the sand with tall tobacco sticks with her cousins while we prepared the picnic lunch. Elizabeth stayed cool under the pecan trees moving from lap to lap. :) We tucked 3 long style picnic tables between two pecans trees and one smaller style table to hold all the food. When you come to Grandma's you can expect a lot of food and that is just what is was! My great aunt Ruth brought a delicious blueberry cobber. I believe I could have eaten the whole thing! It was that good! Oh, and did I mention the home made peach ice cream that Aunt Jean made? Oh, my goodness... There are no words to describe how heavenly it was? Uuuummmmm!!!

Here are a few pictures below~

Can you can see the cornfields in the pictures above? They were beautiful!

Helping Sarah learn to fish. This is one of my favorite past times on the farm, fishing with Granddaddy and then watching Grandma prepare the fish to fry.

Dad grilling and a old pack house in the background. What is a pack house? It is where they packed the tobacco.

Blessings from the farm,
Until next time...
